Bolton Wanderers striker Victor Adeboyejo was sidelined for Tuesday’s EFL Trophy match against Barrow due to an unusual injury reportedly caused by a hefty sneeze.
Adeboyejo, experiencing back and ribcage discomfort, was forced to withdraw from the squad.
According to manager Ian Evatt, the sneeze triggered the injury.
“Victor has been dealing with a severe back issue, and believe it or not, a sneeze aggravated it,” Evatt told The Bolton News on Thursday.
The 26-year-old Nigerian has since undergone a scan to evaluate the extent of the injury.
“He felt a crack between his ribs, and we’re hopeful it’s just a cartilage or muscular issue.
We’ll have a clearer picture once we review the scan,” Evatt explained.
Evatt revealed that the injury initially stemmed from a challenge during a match against Charlton but was exacerbated by the sneeze.
“He was fine initially, but then he had a particularly forceful sneeze.
Victor is quite powerful, and even his sneezes are strong,” Evatt joked.
“I might need to reassess how we handle such injuries if sneezing starts causing problems,” he added.
Despite Adeboyejo’s absence, Bolton achieved a 3-2 victory over Barrow and currently stands 18th in League One, with four points from their first four games of the season.
Adeboyejo joined Bolton Wanderers on January 27, 2023.
