As part of the Lagos State Government’s intensified efforts to curb the sale, use, and distribution of banned Styrofoam and single-use plastics, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), commonly known as KAI, on Thursday incinerated Styrofoam packs worth ₦5 million.
The items were confiscated from various locations across the state over the past month.
The destruction of the materials took place in the Epe area, in collaboration with officials from the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).
Speaking at the event, Corps Marshal of LAGESC, Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (rtd), stated: “The State Government has declared zero tolerance on the sale, usage, and distribution of Styrofoam packs, and there is no going back on this resolve as we are more than committed.”
Cole urged market traders to desist from selling and purchasing the prohibited Styrofoam packs, warning that the Agency will take strict enforcement measures against traders who have turned road setbacks, walkways, medians, kerbs, and verges into illegal sales points.
He emphasized that LAGESC is prepared to use all legal means to reduce hawking and street trading across Lagos.
He reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to minimizing environmental violations within the state and highlighted the importance of collaboration with other agencies to fulfill its mandate when necessary.
In a related development, LAGESC, alongside the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and LAWMA, carried out an enforcement operation on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
The operation, which followed a petition from Lagos State University (LASU), resulted in the removal of trucks and vehicles parked illegally from LASU’s second gate to Okokomaiko.
LAWMA also cleared debris left by illegal occupants and miscreants who had turned the road leading to the state-owned institution into a criminal hideout.
