Senator Darlington Nwokocha, a versatile politician and former Minority Whip of the 10th Senate, has been appointed Secretary of the Labour Party’s 29-member National Caretaker Committee.
The announcement was made by Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, during an extended stakeholders meeting at the Abia State Government House in Umuahia on Wednesday.
The National Caretaker Committee is chaired by Distinguished Senator Nenadi Esther Usman, a former Senator representing Kaduna South and ex-Minister of Finance.
Nwokocha, who represented Abia Central Senatorial District and was elected as a Labour Party Senator in the 2023 elections, served as the Minority Whip and Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on NDDC before leaving the Senate after six months due to a decision by the National Assembly Election Petitions Appeal Court.
Before his tenure in the Senate, Nwokocha served for eight years in the House of Representatives as the member for Isiala Ngwa North/Isiala Ngwa South Federal Constituency, Abia State.
There, he was Chairman of the House Committee on Insurance and Actuarial Matters, Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Federal Character Commission, and led various ad hoc committees.
Nwokocha’s political career also includes eight years as a member of the Abia State House of Assembly, representing Isiala Ngwa South Constituency from 2007 to 2015.
