The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to finish the 130-kilometre stretch through Kebbi State of the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway by next year. Works Minister David Umahi provided the timeline and update on progress at a recent inspection in Silame, Sokoto State.

Umahi said that the Sokoto-Badagry superhighway, which begins from Illela in Sokoto to Badagry in Lagos, is part of President Bola Tinubu’s legacy infrastructure projects. He emphasized that the initiative is a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to boosting socio-economic development across the country, especially in the Northwest.

Outlining the financial investment involved, Umahi disclosed that about ₦2 trillion has been allocated for the Kebbi section of the highway, while Sokoto’s portion has been funded to the tune of ₦1 trillion.

He also highlighted that, “before the end of 2026, the 120 kilometres of superhighway project from the Sokoto axis will be completed.”

The minister addressed concerns that the Northwest was being overlooked in the present government’s infrastructure strategy, reassuring that substantial investments have been channelled into the region.

Umahi described the effort as the fulfilment of a vision dating back 47 years to the Shagari era. “The projects included the 750 km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road Corridor; 1,068 km Sokoto-Badagry Road …” he said, adding that besides roadworks, the design includes concrete pavements, lighting, installation of CCTV cameras, and health, traffic and security stations to respond swiftly to emergencies.

He also commended Hitech Construction Company Ltd., security agencies, and state governments for their collaboration, calling on local communities to support the project execution.
