Nigeria’s music industry has lost one of its iconic figures as veteran Juju musician, Alhaji Ismaila Dele Bello, popularly known as Ahuja Bello, died on Monday at the age of 83, just a day after marking his birthday.
Bello, who rose to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s with his electrifying stage performances and unique guitar rhythms, was widely celebrated as one of the leading voices of Juju music during its golden era.
Born on August 24, 1942, in Iseyin, Oyo State, Bello began his professional journey as an electronic technician before pursuing his passion for music.
In 1976, he established his band, Ahuja Bello and His Golden Eagles Band, which quickly became popular across Nigeria.
His breakthrough came with hit albums such as Awa ti Danfo and Ariya ti de, which cemented his reputation as a vibrant entertainer.
In 1979, he traveled to London to record the project Ahuja in London, during which he reportedly struck a friendship with reggae legend Bob Marley.
Bello’s promising career, however, faced a major setback following a tragic accident in July 1982, a month before his 40th birthday, which limited his active years on stage.
Despite this, his legacy endured through the influence of his music and the devotion of his fans.
Tributes have since poured in from family, fans, and the Juju music community, celebrating his contributions to Nigerian music and culture.
