The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC), Aniedi Ikoiwak, has announced that 12 political parties will participate in the upcoming Local Government elections on October 5 in the state.
Ikoiwak revealed that all 12 parties have submitted the names of their candidates and returned their nomination forms, signaling their readiness for the polls.
“We have maintained smooth relationships with political parties.
From our initial interactions, 19 political parties were involved, but 12 have officially submitted their candidates and nomination forms,” Ikoiwak stated during a press briefing in Uyo, the state capital, on Tuesday.
He also disclosed that arrangements have been finalized for the deployment of 14,000 security personnel across the 4,353 polling units and 369 wards in the state’s 31 local government areas.
This security plan was developed through the commission’s Consultative Committee Meeting on Election Security, which includes the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State and other security heads.
Ikoiwak further noted that over 17,000 individuals have applied to work as ad-hoc staff for the commission, although only between 12,000 and 13,000 will be selected after a thorough screening process.
