Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned his membership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), citing irreconcilable differences and a departure from the party’s founding ideals.
In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the chairman of his ward — PDP Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State — Atiku announced his immediate exit from the party he helped to establish.
He stated that his decision was prompted by the direction the PDP has taken in recent times, which he believes is no longer aligned with the principles on which the party was built. According to him, the party’s current path has made it difficult to continue as a member.
Atiku also reflected on his long-standing relationship with the PDP, expressing appreciation for the opportunities it offered him, including his election as Nigeria’s Vice President for two terms and his emergence as the party’s presidential flag bearer on two occasions.
Describing his resignation as a painful but necessary step, the former vice president extended his best wishes to the PDP and its leadership, acknowledging the crucial role the party played in shaping his political career.
Atiku’s departure comes amid growing speculation about realignments within Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
