In preparation for the burial of Nigeria’s late former President Muhammadu Buhari, the Nigerian Armed Forces has designated nine senior officers — all two-star Generals — as official pallbearers for the solemn ceremony.

The group, made up of three Major Generals, three Rear Admirals, and three Air Vice Marshals, was selected from among serving officers currently based in Abuja.

They have since departed the capital for Katsina State, where Buhari’s remains are expected to arrive from London.

A reception ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Katsina Airport around 2 p.m., after which the body may be airlifted by helicopter to Daura, the late president’s hometown, for interment. Final arrangements are still being finalized.

Among those named as pallbearers are key military figures who served closely during Buhari’s time in office.

They include the former Guards Brigade Commander, Major General M.T. Usman; Major General S. Nuhu; and former Naval spokesperson, Rear Admiral Suleiman Dahun. Others on the list are Rear Admiral S.I. Ngatuwa, Rear Admiral J.O. Ajodo, Air Vice Marshal A. Amesinlola (former Commandant of NAFRC), AVM I. Sani, and AVM O.C. Obiabaka.

There is still some uncertainty regarding the procession route, with the Katsina State local organizing committee proposing a stop at the Emir’s Palace.

However, sources indicate that this may be altered to allow President Bola Tinubu and members of the late president’s family to receive the body directly in Daura.

Further announcements are expected from the funeral planning committee as preparations intensify for the final rites.
