Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has said that Peter Obi deserves to be the presidential flagbearer of the newly formed African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition — not a running mate.
Speaking on Arise TV’s Prime Time on Thursday, Baba-Ahmed emphasized that Obi should not accept a vice-presidential role in the 2027 election, given his performance in the 2023 polls.
“The position of VP is very big. Anyway, I wanted to be, and I was rigged out. But I think Peter Obi should not be a VP, having gotten a disputed 10 million votes,” he stated.
He revealed that the coalition’s presidential ticket is likely to be contested by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi. However, he stressed that Obi’s popular support makes him unsuitable for a subordinate role on any ticket.
Baba-Ahmed also disagreed with the growing narrative that only a united opposition coalition can unseat President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), suggesting instead that electoral integrity and individual credibility remain crucial factors.
