The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced key dates for upcoming electoral activities, including the conduct of bye-elections, the resumption of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), and preparations for the Anambra State Governorship election.
The announcement was made by INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, during the second day of the Commission’s ongoing consultative meetings with major stakeholders. This particular session was held with leaders of registered political parties across the country.
In his remarks, Prof. Yakubu disclosed that bye-elections will be conducted on Saturday, August 16, 2025, in 16 constituencies spread across 12 states. According to him, a total of 3,553,659 registered voters are expected to participate across 32 Local Government Areas, 356 Wards, and 6,987 Polling Units, with 30,451 officials slated for deployment.
However, he clarified that elections will not hold in two constituencies. “There will be no bye-election in Khana II State Constituency of Rivers State due to the prevailing state of emergency, and in Talata Mafara South State Constituency of Zamfara State because of a legal challenge regarding the declared vacancy by the State Assembly,” the INEC Chairman said.
Prof. Yakubu outlined the timeline for the bye-elections, stating that political parties are to conduct their primaries from July 17 to 21, 2025, while the submission of nomination forms via the Commission’s portal will commence at 9:00 a.m. on July 22 and close by 6:00 p.m. on July 26, 2025. He added that public campaigns are scheduled to run from August 2 to August 14, 2025.
Additionally, the INEC boss announced the Commission’s decision to resume CVR at both state and national levels. He explained that in preparation for the Anambra governorship election, the voter registration exercise will be conducted across all 326 Wards in the state from July 8 to 17, 2025, running daily from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., including weekends.
The meeting forms part of INEC’s ongoing efforts to engage stakeholders in building a transparent and inclusive electoral process ahead of key elections.
