After more than three decades of waiting, the Federal Government has commenced the handover of houses to members of Nigeria’s 1994 Super Eagles squad, fulfilling a long-standing promise made in recognition of their triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development announced the development in a statement on Wednesday, marking a significant step in honouring the legacy of the iconic team that brought continental glory to the country.
One of the recipients, former national team striker Efan Ekoku, was issued a formal allocation letter for a house located in Abuja.
Ekoku, who could not attend the event in person, was represented by his niece, Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun, during the brief but symbolic ceremony.
The letter was presented by Pemi Temitope, Director and Head of the Department of Public Building and Housing Development, on behalf of the Minister of Housing and Urban Development.
Temitope stated that the initiative represents the government’s continued commitment to recognising and rewarding those who have rendered patriotic service to the nation.
Nwagbogun expressed appreciation on behalf of Ekoku, noting that the gesture not only honours the player’s contribution but also reinforces public confidence in the fulfilment of government promises.
The housing pledge dates back to 1994 but remained unfulfilled until 2022, when former President Muhammadu Buhari approved its implementation.
Since then, members of the celebrated squad have begun receiving their allocated housing units across various states, with some, like Ekoku, being allotted homes in the Federal Capital Territory.
The move has been widely welcomed as a long-overdue recognition of the historic achievements of one of Nigeria’s most revered national teams.
