The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced its collaboration with the Republic of Armenia to ensure the safe evacuation of Nigerian citizens from the Islamic Republic of Iran through the Armenian capital, Yerevan.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, who noted that evacuation preparations have reached an advanced stage.

The move follows heightened tensions and escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran. In response to the deteriorating security situation, the Nigerian government earlier disclosed plans for an emergency evacuation of its citizens from both countries.

Reaffirming this commitment, Nigeria’s Chargé d’Affaires in Iran, Abdulrasheed Omar Lawal, on Saturday met with the Acting Director of the Middle East and Africa Department at Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Levon Petrosyan, to finalize arrangements.

During the meeting, the Nigerian envoy expressed appreciation for Armenia’s support, describing it as a reflection of international cooperation and solidarity in times of crisis.

“This compassionate gesture by Armenia underscored the importance of international solidarity and humanitarian cooperation in times of crisis. Nigeria deeply appreciates the willingness of Armenia to assist in ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens caught in the distressing situation,” the statement read.

The Nigerian government also emphasized its strong diplomatic ties with Armenia, adding: “Nigeria values the strong diplomatic relations with Armenia and looks forward to further strengthening bilateral ties in the spirit of mutual respect and shared humanity.”

The Ministry further assured that relevant Nigerian agencies are working closely with Armenian authorities and international partners to ensure a smooth and efficient evacuation process.
