The Governor of Niger State, Umaru Bago, has expressed concern that Nigeria is still not where it ought to be, despite enjoying uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999.

Governor Bago made this known in a Democracy Day message released on Wednesday through his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, to commemorate June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

According to the governor, more efforts are needed from leaders to steer the country toward meaningful economic growth and national development.

He advocated for continuous electoral reforms, increased civic engagement, and the strengthening of democratic institutions that safeguard the rights of the vulnerable, ensure justice, and promote equal opportunities for all citizens.

“These measures,” he said, “are crucial for advancing democracy in Nigeria.”

Governor Bago also called on Nigerians to reflect deeply on the nation’s democratic journey, renew their commitment to democratic ideals, and uphold the core principles of governance by the people.

“June 12 symbolises the victory of the collective will of the people over dictatorship,” he said. “The day reminds every patriotic Nigerian of the struggles, sacrifices, aspirations, and resilience of our past heroes and heroines.”

While acknowledging the gains of democracy, he noted that it has brought transparency, accountability in governance, vibrant political competition, expression of diverse viewpoints, and increased civic engagement.

Reaffirming his commitment to delivering good governance, the governor assured the people of Niger State that his administration remains focused on providing the dividends of democracy through responsible and inclusive leadership under the New Niger agenda.
“I urge you all to continue to pray for leaders at all levels for a purposeful leadership. I reaffirm my commitment to the New Niger project, which is a possibility,” Governor Bago stated.

He also appealed for continued support, prayers, and understanding from the citizens as his administration works towards building a more secure, prosperous, and transformed Niger State.
