Chelsea Football Club has abruptly withdrawn from negotiations to sign AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, with the highly anticipated deal collapsing over a valuation impasse, according to renowned transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.
Talks between the two European giants had reportedly reached an advanced stage, but the Premier League side balked at Milan’s steep asking price — a fee believed to include a premium linked to Maignan’s potential role in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
“Mike Maignan deal now OFF between Chelsea and AC Milan. Chelsea not willing to meet Milan price, deal not proceeding in time for Club World Cup as #CFC won’t pay ‘CWC tax’,” Romano revealed on Tuesday.
The decision marks a significant shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy, signaling the club’s intent to rely on its existing goalkeeping unit rather than spending big on a marquee signing.
Romano added that Chelsea “maintain full trust in Petrović, Sánchez, Jorgensen, [and] talent Mike Penders” heading into the new season — a clear message that the club believes its current roster can deliver between the sticks.
Maignan, widely regarded as one of Europe’s top goalkeepers, had been a key target for Chelsea as they sought to reinforce their squad ahead of a congested campaign. But with the deal now off the table, attention turns to how the club’s current keepers will rise to the challenge.
The Blues are set to begin pre-season preparations later this month, with fans watching closely to see how this decision plays out on the pitch.
