President Bola Tinubu has approved the immediate release of ₦2 billion for the reconstruction of homes destroyed by the devastating flood in Mokwa, Niger State. The disaster, which struck on May 28, 2025, has claimed over 200 lives and displaced hundreds more.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Mokwa on behalf of the President, made the announcement during an assessment tour of the affected areas. According to Shettima, President Tinubu also directed the release of 20 trucks of rice to support displaced residents and pledged a swift response to the community’s needs.
“The President’s heart is with the people of Mokwa. All the critical issues you’re facing will be addressed immediately,” Shettima said.
Additional directives from the Presidency include:
- Immediate repair of affected bridges in the area.
- Rehabilitation of drainage systems across Mokwa town to prevent future disasters.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Suleiman, Niger State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, confirmed that over 200 bodies have been recovered, and search-and-rescue efforts are ongoing. “We are still recovering corpses. Nobody can say the exact number yet,” he said on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
The state government has launched an emergency response, distributing relief materials to victims now sheltering in makeshift camps. Niger First Lady also donated ₦50 million during her visit.
Despite these efforts, displaced residents have voiced frustration over inadequate relief. Mama Isah, a flood victim, lamented, “We are 17 in my household but were only given one loaf of bread and some tea. How is that enough for anyone?”
The government has promised to scale up aid distribution in the coming days.
