Chelle Still Confident in Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup Hopes

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle remains optimistic about Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite a shaky start to the qualifying campaign.

Chelle, who took charge following Nigeria’s winless run in their opening four qualifiers, has shifted focus to the crucial fixtures ahead. The Malian tactician has moved on from the team’s disappointing draw against Zimbabwe and is already plotting the path forward for the three-time African champions.

The 47-year-old outlined how the Super Eagles can still book their place at the global football showpiece, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Following Chelle’s appointment, Nigeria bounced back with a morale-boosting 2-0 win over Rwanda in Kigali. However, a subsequent draw against Zimbabwe complicated their qualification hopes, leaving the Super Eagles six points behind group leaders South Africa.

With just four matches left, Chelle insists the team must take maximum points from every remaining game while hoping other results go their way. He has earmarked the clash with South Africa as a potential turning point.

“It’s an obligation to win in South Africa, but the most important match for us right now is Rwanda in Uyo,” Chelle said.

“South Africa are a good side, but for that game, we cannot afford to let them play. First, we have to beat Rwanda at home, then we will focus on South Africa.”

Nigeria will host Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on September 3rd, before travelling to face South Africa four days later.

To keep their qualification hopes alive, the Super Eagles must deliver top performances in the remaining fixtures. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is also taking steps to ensure the team is well-prepared, lining up friendly matches ahead of the September qualifiers.

Among the scheduled activities is a proposed friendly against FIFA-banned Russia in June, as well as participation in a four-nation tournament tagged “The Unity Cup,” featuring Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica.

While the NFF is yet to officially confirm the fixtures, announcements are expected in the coming days.
