At least twelve people were reported killed by terrorists believed to be led by the notorious bandit kingpin, Bello Turji, in Lugu town, located in the Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
Multiple sources confirmed to Channels Television that the attack occurred as the bandits, returning from a Sallah visit to one of the nearby communities, brutally murdered the farmers in what appears to be a targeted act of violence.
Sokoto state police authorities declined to comment on the incident, citing an ongoing joint military operation in the region and stating that the police were not authorized to speak on security matters within the area.
The Army, stationed at the 8th Division, referred Channels Television to the Theatre Command of the Operation FASAN YAMMA for further information.
However, as of yet, the Theatre Command has not responded to requests for comment on the tragic attack.
A lawmaker representing Sabon Birni in the Sokoto State House of Assembly shared that local residents had informed him about the attack.
However, he clarified that there were no reports indicating that Bello Turji had visited any communities in the area for the Sallah celebration.
The lawmaker also mentioned a report suggesting Turji had planned to visit the eastern part of Gataws for the holiday, but thanks to prompt action by local residents, who alerted security personnel, Turji’s planned visit was thwarted.
It is believed that the bandit leader’s frustration over the foiled visit may have led to the vicious attack on the innocent farmers.
