Political tensions in Rivers State escalated on Wednesday as Governor Siminalayi Fubara was denied entry into the official quarters of the state House of Assembly along Aba Road, Port Harcourt.
The facility has served as the meeting venue for lawmakers loyal to former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Governor Fubara arrived at the premises in the company of key government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, and his Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie. However, upon arrival, they found the gates locked, preventing access to the complex.
Addressing journalists at the scene, the governor expressed frustration over his inability to reach Speaker Martin Amaewhule, whom he had attempted to contact multiple times before his visit.
He also revealed that a formal letter requesting a meeting had been sent in advance but was ignored. Fubara reiterated that his efforts were in the interest of the people and assured that his administration remained committed to its constitutional duties.
Meanwhile, former governor Wike criticized Fubara’s approach, arguing that he should have contacted the Speaker directly instead of sending a formal letter. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Wike dismissed the letter as unnecessary and emphasized the need for proper communication with the lawmakers.
The incident underscores the ongoing power struggle within the state, further deepening political uncertainty in Rivers.
