Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, made her return to the Senate Chamber on Wednesday as plenary resumed following a one-week recess.
She was accompanied by her husband, who shared a brief moment of affection, giving her a kiss before she entered the chamber to take her seat.
The senator took her position in a newly assigned seat, which has been at the heart of a growing controversy.
The dispute over the seat has ignited tensions within the Senate, particularly after Senator Natasha accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment.
Senator Akpabio has firmly denied the allegations, rejecting any wrongdoing.
However, the controversy surrounding the claim has raised serious concerns about decorum and conduct within the legislative body, further intensifying the spotlight on the Senate.
As plenary resumed, all eyes were on Senator Natasha, who confidently settled into her seat, signaling her determination to continue her legislative work despite the ongoing controversy.
In a parallel development, a group of protesters gathered outside the National Assembly in support of the Kogi senator, calling attention to her case.
The protests intensified as the Senate’s Ethics Committee, led by Senator Neda Imaseun, prepares to investigate Natasha’s alleged refusal to adhere to Senate rules.
Amid the protests, security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, but the demonstrators remained resolute, regrouping and demanding action.
They accused Senate President Akpabio of silencing and discrediting women, urging President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the matter.
The allegations of sexual harassment have now taken on a broader human rights dimension, further fueling the debate and highlighting the challenges surrounding gender equality and justice within the Senate.
