The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has lauded the resolution of the 49-day leadership crisis in the State House of Assembly, describing it as a triumph for democracy.

The crisis erupted on January 13 when Speaker Mudashiru Obasa was impeached over allegations of abuse of office and misconduct, with 32 out of 40 lawmakers voting for his removal. His ouster led to the appointment of Mojisola Meranda as Speaker, deepening divisions within the Assembly.

However, after extensive mediation by the APC and other stakeholders, Meranda stepped down during a plenary session on Monday, March 3, 2025, allowing Obasa to return to his position.

APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo commended the lawmakers for prioritizing collective interests over personal ambitions.

“We congratulate the people of Lagos, particularly members of the House of Assembly, APC leaders, and party members, for amicably resolving the rift,” Oladejo stated.

He further praised the lawmakers for demonstrating unity and foresight in overcoming the impasse.

“We commend the lawmakers for setting aside personal interests in favor of our collective goals and aspirations,” he added.

Oladejo emphasized that the Assembly had emerged stronger from the crisis, with a renewed commitment to serving the state.

“Ultimately, this is a victory for democracy and highlights the sophistication of Lagos politics, which stands above common standards.

“As a truly democratic party, the APC refrained from unnecessary interference in legislative matters, respecting the Assembly’s independence,” he said.

He also dismissed opposition parties’ reactions to the crisis, suggesting they had celebrated prematurely, calling the situation “a storm in a teacup.”
