Yakubu Aiyegbeni, a legendary figure in Nigerian football, has hailed Didier Drogba, the iconic Ivorian forward, as the greatest African player to ever grace the Premier League.
Aiyegbeni, who made his mark as a prolific striker during his time in the league, netting 95 goals across various clubs, understands the fierce competition that defines this prestigious tournament.
In a recent interview that sparked discussions online, the former Everton star addressed Mohamed Salah’s assertion of being the top African player in Premier League history.
While acknowledging Salah’s impressive skills, the 41-year-old stopped short of naming him the best. Instead of opting for fellow Nigerian legends like Jay Jay Okocha or Kanu Nwankwo, he reserved the honor for Drogba.
You can’t claim Salah is the greatest African in Premier League history. Drogba was extraordinary; he scored with remarkable ease,” Aiyegbeni stated in an interview with Goal.
Nonetheless, Salah deserves recognition for surpassing the records of such a legendary figure, which certainly places him among the elite African players in the league, but for now, he isn’t the greatest.
Drogba clinched four Premier League titles with Chelsea, amassing 104 goals in 254 matches. In contrast, Salah has secured just one Premier League title so far, with an impressive tally of 158 goals in 264 appearances.
