The Katsina State Government has unveiled the Rumbun Sauki initiative, a consumer shop program designed to reduce market prices, enhance food security, and improve residents’ living standards.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, who launched the N4 billion initiative on Monday, described it as a strategic move to promote economic stability across the state. The unveiling took place during a sensitization and registration program at the state secretariat in Katsina.
The government plans to commence sales with a 10% subsidy for state workers, local government employees, LEA staff, and elderly residents. The program will initially operate through seven centers—three in Katsina, and two each in Daura and Funtua senatorial zones.
Governor Radda assured that strict oversight measures would be in place to prevent abuse, warning that any program managers found guilty of misconduct would face legal action.
Deputy Governor Faruk Lawal Jobe highlighted the initiative’s economic potential, projecting an annual turnover of at least N50 billion from vendors. He emphasized that the investment would significantly impact the procurement of essential commodities.
Special Adviser on Rural Economy, Yakubu Nuhu Danja, detailed the variety of staple food items to be provided, including rice, flour, corn flour, and spaghetti, ensuring affordability and accessibility for residents.
“The items will be packaged in various sizes, ranging from 50 kilograms to one kilogram,” Danja explained. “Rumbun Sauki is not just a government initiative but a lifeline for families and individuals facing economic hardship.”
The program consultant, Dr. Shuaibu Mohammed of Strangler Integrated Value Chain and Services, outlined the registration process, stating, “All eligible beneficiaries are expected to register online to gain full access to the commodities using ATM or Monie Point accounts and Internet transactions.”
