The House of Representatives has called on relevant Federal Government agencies to enforce stricter measures against homicidal and femicidal acts in Nigeria.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion during Tuesday’s plenary, moved by Rivers lawmaker Awaji-Inombek Abiante and three others.
Supporting the motion, Abiante emphasized that the right to life is a fundamental human right guaranteed by the Constitution. However, he expressed concern over the rising cases of homicide, including murder, manslaughter, and other violent crimes, which have fueled public outcry for justice.
“Femicide, which is the intentional killing of women and girls due to their gender, has become a significant concern, with several reported cases in recent years,” Abiante stated.
Following the motion’s adoption, the House urged the National Judicial Council (NJC) to establish special court divisions at all levels to expedite the handling of homicide, femicide, and related cases.
