The World Health Organization (WHO) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Lagos State Government in its quest to enhance healthcare services.
WHO’s Country Representative, Dr. Walter Mulombo, expressed this dedication during a courtesy visit to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
In a statement available on the WHO website, Dr. Mulombo highlighted the governor’s earlier commitment to improving healthcare during their meeting at Chatham House in London.
This pledge by Governor Sanwo-Olu has led to a strengthened partnership with WHO to bolster healthcare reforms in Lagos State.
Dr. Mulombo assured the governor of WHO’s full collaboration, stating, “Counting on Mr. Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, WHO is willing to partner with the Lagos State Government to strengthen human resources for health.
By building a skilled and responsive health workforce, Nigeria can improve health outcomes and reinforce the overall health system in Lagos.”
He commended Lagos State for leading in the Health Insurance Scheme, surpassing the target of one million enrollees per state, and contributing over 10% of Nigeria’s GDP.
Dr. Mulombo also noted the state’s success in attracting medical practitioners from the diaspora, akin to India’s medical tourism model.
Praising the primary healthcare reforms under Governor Sanwo-Olu, Dr. Mulombo revealed WHO’s plans to pilot a global framework for strengthening healthcare emergencies in urban areas within Lagos.
He emphasized the need for an escalated response to the ongoing cholera outbreak to prevent further spread and fatalities, stressing the importance of integrating health and environmental strategies for sustainable development.
Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his strong support for WHO’s framework and its implementation in Lagos.
He acknowledged WHO’s invaluable support, stating, “We are grateful for WHO’s partnership and support in our fight against cholera and other health challenges.
Our administration is dedicated to creating a healthier Lagos by investing in health infrastructure, promoting environmental sanitation, and ensuring access to clean water.”
The partnership between WHO and Lagos State marks a significant milestone in advancing health emergency preparedness, particularly in urban settings.
The collaboration will focus on capacity building for health workers, enhancing disease surveillance, and implementing community-based health interventions.
