The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Usman Yusuf, on a five-count amended charge of alleged fraud.
Yusuf was brought before Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Kuje, Abuja, where he pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The EFCC alleges that between 2016 and 2017, the former NHIS boss abused his office for personal gain and awarded contracts without adhering to proper procurement procedures.
Following his plea, Yusuf’s counsel, O.I. Habeeb, requested that his client remain in EFCC custody until his bail application is heard. However, Justice Nwecheonwu ruled that once a defendant is arraigned, they are no longer under EFCC custody.
The judge subsequently ordered Yusuf’s remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre and adjourned the case to February 12, 2025, for the hearing of his bail application.
