The Rivers State government has confirmed an outbreak of cholera in two Local Government Areas (LGAs), reporting five cases and nine related deaths.
According to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, all five confirmed cases were recorded in Akuku-Toru LGA, while the fatalities occurred across both Akuku-Toru and Andoni LGAs.
In response to the outbreak, the state’s Ministry of Health has deployed emergency response teams to the affected areas to contain the spread and has launched intensive public sensitization campaigns to educate residents on preventive measures.
Dr. Oreh highlighted the critical importance of maintaining personal and environmental hygiene, as well as promptly reporting suspected cases to health authorities. She urged parents and caregivers to cooperate with health officials working to mitigate the outbreak’s impact.
Residents in the affected areas have been advised to practice proper sanitation, drink only safe water, and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, or dehydration.
The state government reassured the public of its commitment to safeguarding public health and pledged to provide updates as efforts to manage the outbreak progress.
