The Federal Government has confirmed an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, commonly referred to as bird flu, in Kano State.

The disease has been reported among various bird species, including layers, ducks, guinea fowls, and turkeys.

A circular issued by Dr. Taiwo Olasoju on behalf of the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria highlighted the heightened risk of the disease spreading during this period.

The government has urged state veterinary offices and relevant agencies to activate surveillance systems to contain the virus.

Authorities emphasized the need for strict biosecurity measures, public awareness campaigns, and close monitoring of poultry populations to quickly detect and respond to potential cases.

Preventive measures, they stressed, are critical to stopping the virus from spreading to neighboring states and other regions.

Providing additional context, the Chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Kano State chapter, Dr. Usman Gwarzo, shared details of an incident that first raised alarm.

In December 2024, a young man in Galadanchi quarters of Gwale Local Government Area purchased a duck from Janguza market in Tofa LGA. After introducing it to his flock of hens and chickens, the duck died suddenly, followed by the chickens.

Tests conducted on samples taken from the carcasses in early January 2025 confirmed the presence of the virus. Despite the outbreak, no similar cases have been reported among commercial poultry farms.

In response, the PAN Kano chapter is collaborating with the state government to raise awareness among poultry farmers and traders about the risks and necessary precautions to curb the spread of the disease.
