Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has unveiled a groundbreaking feature that allows users to transcribe voice messages into text, offering greater convenience and flexibility.
According to WhatsApp, the transcription feature ensures privacy, as transcripts are generated directly on users’ devices. “No one else, not even WhatsApp, can hear or read your personal messages,” the platform stated in a press release on Thursday, November 21. However, it remains unclear if these transcripts are end-to-end encrypted or powered by AI.
The Voice Note Transcript feature will roll out globally in the coming weeks, with initial support for select languages. Users can enable the feature through Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts and choose their preferred transcription language. Once activated, transcriptions can be generated by long-pressing a voice note and selecting the “Transcribe” option. This feature is particularly helpful in environments where listening to voice notes is impractical.
In addition to voice transcription, WhatsApp recently introduced other user-centric updates, including:
Video call personalization: Users can now apply filters and custom backgrounds to make video calls more engaging.
Draft messages: Unfinished messages are now automatically saved as drafts, ensuring users can resume where they left off. A draft indicator serves as a reminder of incomplete texts.
These features reflect WhatsApp’s commitment to innovation and improving user experience. By integrating practical solutions like transcription and personalization tools, WhatsApp continues to set a high standard in the messaging app space.
