Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior will miss the highly anticipated Champions League clash against Liverpool after suffering a hamstring injury.
In a statement released Monday, the Spanish giants confirmed the Brazilian’s condition: “After tests taken today, our player Vinicius Junior has been diagnosed by Real Madrid’s medical services with a hamstring injury in his left leg.”
Spanish media reports indicate the 24-year-old could be sidelined for nearly a month. This absence not only rules him out of Wednesday’s game at Anfield but also the Champions League match against Atalanta on December 10.
Vinicius played a full 90 minutes in Real Madrid’s 3-0 La Liga victory over Leganes on Sunday, where he set up Kylian Mbappé’s opening goal. The winger has been in scintillating form this season, with four Champions League goals in as many games and eight La Liga strikes in 13 matches.
The injury is a blow for the Ballon d’Or runner-up, who has outperformed summer signing Mbappé in recent weeks.
Real Madrid, the reigning Champions League holders, have struggled in Europe this season, with two defeats in four games leaving them 18th in the expanded group-stage table. Losses to Lille (1-0) and AC Milan (3-1) in their last two outings have added pressure to their campaign.
Meanwhile, Liverpool, under the guidance of new coach Arne Slot, remain in commanding form, leading both the Champions League and Premier League standings. The Reds will be hoping to capitalize on Vinicius’ absence as they continue their strong run.
