A devastating road accident on the Benin-Ore-Ijebu Ode Expressway in Ondo State claimed the lives of 30 people on Saturday evening.

The incident occurred at Onipetesi community in Odigbo Local Government Area when two commercial buses collided head-on and burst into flames.

According to the Ondo Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), preliminary investigations suggest that one of the buses was driving against traffic, leading to the fatal collision. The impact caused both vehicles to catch fire, trapping the passengers inside.

Authorities confirmed that 28 victims were burnt beyond recognition, while two passengers initially survived but later succumbed to their injuries on the way to the hospital.

Eyewitnesses described the horrifying scene, recalling how they heard a loud crash and rushed to the location, only to find the two buses engulfed in flames. Passengers were seen struggling to escape, but the fire spread rapidly, leaving no survivors.

Emergency responders, including FRSC personnel, arrived swiftly to manage the situation and transport the injured, but the severity of the burns made survival impossible.

In response to the tragic incident, the FRSC has urged motorists to exercise caution and strictly adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of lives on the expressway.
