President Bola Tinubu has described former U.S. President Jimmy Carter as a symbol of service to humanity. Tinubu made the remark in a statement on Monday while mourning Carter, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 100.
Highlighting Carter’s dedication to global peace and progress, Tinubu noted that his legacy extended far beyond his time in office. “President Carter showed us all how to remain relevant and impactful after leaving the esteemed position of President of the United States,” Tinubu said in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.
Tinubu praised Carter’s work in addressing critical global challenges, particularly his focus on peace, democracy, and the eradication of diseases. “He tackled the challenges the developing world faced, from combating diseases to mediating conflicts and promoting democratic values. He exemplified grace, dignity, and a profound respect for humanity,” Tinubu said.
The Nigerian leader also acknowledged Carter’s significant contributions to Nigeria through The Carter Center. Tinubu lauded the Center’s efforts in eliminating Guinea worm disease and river blindness in the country, describing Carter as a “trustworthy and compassionate friend” to Nigeria.
Tinubu expressed hope that Carter’s legacy of character and humanity would continue to inspire leaders worldwide. “His life and work remind us of the true essence of leadership,” Tinubu said, urging Americans and global leaders to embrace Carter’s example of decency and selfless service.
