President Bola Tinubu met with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace in London, the United Kingdom, during a private meeting aimed at reinforcing ties between Nigeria and the UK.

The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, shared details of the meeting in a statement released on Thursday.

He emphasized the strong relationship between both nations, noting that the meeting focused on global and regional issues of shared importance, particularly the pressing challenges posed by climate change.

“Both leaders discussed global and regional matters of shared priority, focusing on the urgent and complex challenge of climate change,” Onanuga stated.

The meeting also served as an opportunity for President Tinubu and King Charles to explore avenues for collaboration ahead of the upcoming COP 29 Summit in Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa.

President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to tackling climate change, ensuring that efforts are in line with the country’s energy security objectives.

He also expressed Nigeria’s readiness to embrace international strategies for sustainability.

“During their dialogue, the two leaders shared ideas for innovative approaches to climate financing and funding, expressing mutual interest in strengthening partnerships by harnessing Nigeria’s leadership position in Africa and the Commonwealth,” the statement added.

This was the first meeting between President Tinubu and King Charles since their encounter at the COP 28 Climate Summit in Dubai last year.

The recent engagement was initiated at the request of the King.
