A spectacular late goal by Flourish Sabastine in Bogota handed Nigeria a crucial 1-0 victory over Korea Republic, putting the Falconets in a strong position to advance to the Round of 16 at the 11th FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.
The match, held at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo, was a tightly contested affair between two familiar foes.
While chances were scarce, Nigeria managed to create more opportunities, particularly in an engaging second half.
Mary Lucky Mkpa, leading the line for the Falconets, was a constant threat but was unable to convert several promising chances.
Korea Republic, who were also defeated by Nigeria in the group stage of the previous tournament in Costa Rica, nearly took the lead 15 minutes in. However, Shukurat Oladipo’s crucial intervention thwarted Park’s effort.
Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Shukurat Bakare, had a shaky moment in the 28th minute, missing a cross that fortunately deflected off a Korean player and sailed over the bar.
At the other end, Mkpa’s shot soared just above the target after a neat setup from Rofiat Imuran. The Falconets were fortunate again just before halftime when Myeyung’s powerful free-kick from 22 yards rattled the crossbar.
In the second half, Nigeria continued to press, with Sabastine and Amina Bello having their shots blocked, while substitute Chiamaka Okwuchukwu nearly scored after a brilliant run down the right flank.
The breakthrough finally came when Sabastine, from the right wing, struck a curling shot that ricocheted off the upright and into the net, securing the game’s only goal.
The Falconets now prepare for a crucial match against three-time champions Germany at the same venue on Wednesday evening.
