The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced a 7-day nationwide warning strike across all its centers.
The strike is in response to the prolonged captivity of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a member who has been held for over eight months.
In a statement, NARD President Dr. Dele Abdullahi revealed that the strike will commence at 12 a.m. on Monday, August 26, 2024.
The decision was made during an emergency virtual National Executive Council meeting held on Sunday, August 25, 2024.
Dr. Abdullahi emphasized that the strike will be total, with no emergency services provided during this period.
Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, was abducted nearly eight months ago, along with her husband and nephew.
While her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity.
In recent weeks, NARD members have staged protests at tertiary hospitals nationwide, demanding the immediate release of Dr. Popoola.
