The House of Representatives will hold a public hearing on the Endangered Species Conservation and Protection Bill on October 24.
Deputy Chair of the House Committee on Environment, Terseer Ugbor, is leading the bill, which targets the illegal wildlife trade, species conservation, and the degradation of wildlife habitats.
The bill aims to improve law enforcement, accelerate the handling of wildlife-related cases, strengthen international collaboration, and impose harsher penalties for offenders.
“Protecting our wildlife means protecting livelihoods and ensuring a balanced ecosystem,” Ugbor said.
The hearing is being organized in collaboration with the House Committees on Treaties, Protocols, and Environment. The bill has garnered support from several local and international organizations, including the Africa Nature Investors Foundation (ANI), the UK’s Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), and Wild Africa (WA), as part of broader global efforts to combat wildlife trafficking.
