The Nigerian presidency has clarified that the country did not participate in the 2024 United Nations Human Rights Council elections, held on October 9, 2024. This follows reports suggesting that Nigeria was overlooked in the election.
In a press statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the presidency emphasized that “Nigeria was not snubbed.” The statement explained that any votes mistakenly attributed to Nigeria were likely cast in error by other nations.
The presidency further noted that in such international elections, countries typically receive regional endorsements. Nigeria, in this instance, focused on supporting endorsed candidates to strengthen Africa’s collective representation on the global stage.
The presidency also urged media outlets to ensure accuracy in their reporting and warned against spreading misleading narratives that could harm Nigeria’s reputation in international affairs.
