The Minister of power, Adebayo Adelabu, revealed on Monday that the Federal Government is actively working on alternative power solutions for Northern states affected by an ongoing blackout.

The prolonged outage follows the vandalization of the critical Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line, which supplies electricity to about 17 states in the region.

In a briefing after a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Adelabu explained that efforts are underway to utilize the Ikot Ekpene substation, drawing power from the Calabar plant, as an alternative supply route for the North.

“We have also explored the alternative line of providing light to the north through the Ikot Ekpene substation,” he stated.

However, he noted that “the line got cut along the line, and we’re also trying to fix that.”

The Minister highlighted that at the last Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, approval was granted to upgrade the Shiroro-Kaduna line as part of long-term improvements to ensure reliable power for Northern states.

“This disturbance in electricity supply involves about 17 states,” Adelabu confirmed, attributing the disruptions primarily to the recent vandalism of the Shiroro-Kaduna line, a crucial source of electricity for Northern Nigeria.
