The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the foiling of a kidnap attempt along the Warewa axis of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, where operatives neutralized four armed suspects during a gun battle.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Omolola Odutola, revealed that the incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Friday. The attackers had ambushed a white Paragon commercial vehicle (registration number BDG 753 YH) en route to Lagos, driven by Mr. Morufu Adedeji.
The assailants forcibly stopped the vehicle, held the driver at gunpoint, and began robbing passengers. However, Odutola explained that some passengers managed to escape after the driver courageously opened the rear door.
“This act enraged the kidnappers, who then brutally assaulted the driver until he lost consciousness. Other motorists raised an alarm, which was swiftly intercepted by the Anti-Kidnapping Team on patrol,” Odutola stated.
Upon arrival, police operatives engaged the suspects in a gunfight, fatally injuring four, while others fled with gunshot wounds into the nearby forest. The bodies of the neutralized suspects have been deposited at the State Hospital Morgue, Ijaiye, Abeokuta, for autopsy and further investigation.
Recovered items from the scene included a locally made pistol with two cartridges, two daggers, ₦20,000 in cash, a Tecno Android phone, a solar power bank, and three USB lights suspected to have been stolen.
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, reiterated the command’s commitment to eradicating criminal activities in the area. He has reinforced tactical operatives at strategic flashpoints, particularly in Arepo, and ordered intensified patrols to ensure the safety of residents and commuters.
The police have urged the public, particularly medical practitioners, to report any individuals seeking treatment for gunshot wounds.
