In a statement released on Monday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrest, stating that officers from the Igbeba Division in Ijebu-Ode apprehended the 33-year-old suspect after receiving an intelligence report.
According to Odutola, Olayemi had been attempting to blend in with residents in the university area when his identity was confirmed.
“The divisional police officer of Igbeba Division has arrested a notorious armed robbery suspect,” the statement read. “Following a tip-off, Olayemi Olawale Shedrack, aged 33, was sighted in Ijagun trying to conceal himself.
His identity was quickly confirmed, and the police acted swiftly to apprehend him.”
Olayemi had been on the police radar for his involvement in an armed robbery and rape incident on July 21, 2024.
He and his accomplice reportedly broke into the Royal Villa, a female student accommodation at Tai Solarin University of Education, where they robbed students of laptops, iPhones, sports wristwatches, and cash.
Additionally, Olayemi was accused of sexually assaulting one of the students before fleeing the scene.
Preliminary investigations have begun, and Olayemi is currently being held at the Igbeba Police Station for interrogation.
He will soon be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Alamutu Abiodun Mustapha, has ordered the arrest of Olayemi’s accomplices and called on residents of the Ijagun community to provide credible information to help track down other members of the gang.
