The National Economic Council (NEC) has mandated Kwara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to submit their reports on the establishment of state police by September 9.
This decision was announced on Wednesday by Bayo Lawal, the Acting Governor of Oyo State, during a briefing with State House correspondents after the NEC meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The NEC’s directive comes as part of ongoing efforts to address the security challenges facing the country by considering the decentralization of policing powers to the states.
The council has been deliberating on the creation of state police as a potential solution to the rising insecurity in various parts of the country, and these reports are expected to provide critical insights into the feasibility and implementation strategies for such a move.
Governor Lawal emphasized the importance of these reports in shaping the future of Nigeria’s security architecture. “The NEC has set a firm deadline of September 9 for the states of Kwara, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Adamawa, as well as the FCT, to submit their findings and recommendations regarding the establishment of state police,” Lawal stated.
“This is a crucial step in our collective efforts to enhance security across the nation.”
The decision underscores the federal government’s commitment to exploring alternative measures to strengthen security at the grassroots level.
The reports from these states and the FCT are expected to address various aspects of the proposed state police system, including operational frameworks, funding, and jurisdictional issues.
As the deadline approaches, the NEC will continue to engage with stakeholders across the country to ensure that the final recommendations reflect the diverse needs and concerns of all regions.
The findings from these reports will likely play a significant role in shaping the discussions on state police, which has been a contentious issue in the national discourse.
More details on this development are expected to emerge as the September 9 deadline draws near.
