The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued an alert to Nigerians regarding the recall of Nivea’s 50ml Black & White Invisible Roll-on deodorant.
The product, marketed as offering 48-hour protection in African climates, has been flagged by the European Union Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products in Brussels.
In a statement released on Thursday, NAFDAC identified the product’s batch number as 93529610 and noted it contains 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde.
According to the agency, this chemical is prohibited in cosmetic products as it “has the potential to cause harm to the reproductive system, impair the health of an unborn child, and cause skin irritation and burns to users.”
NAFDAC further noted that the product is manufactured in Germany and bears the Bar Code Number 42299882.
The agency urged importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to be vigilant and cautious within the supply chain to avoid the importation, sale, and use of the affected batch of Nivea Roll-on.
“Members of the public in possession of the affected batch should cease sale or use and submit stock to the nearest NAFDAC office,” the notice advised.
NAFDAC also encouraged healthcare professionals and consumers to report any adverse events associated with this or other regulated products to the agency. Reports can be submitted to the nearest NAFDAC office, via email at pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng, through NAFDAC’s e-reporting platform at www.nafdac.gov.ng, or via the Med-safety app, available for download on Android and iOS.
