The Wives of Fallen Heroes in Lagos State have expressed concerns over the lack of support from the state government, highlighting their struggles during the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony held at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos Island.
Representing the group, Oluwaseyi Iliya, lamented that despite the annual celebration of Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the widows have not received tangible assistance from the Lagos State government.
She pointed out that the only notable effort was in 2024 when provisions were made for just 10 widows. Since then, she stated, there have been no follow-up actions or significant outreach.
The military widows, according to Iliya, face immense challenges in providing for their families due to the prevailing economic difficulties.
She acknowledged the Nigerian Army’s contribution to the education of the widows’ children but emphasized the need for the Lagos State government to engage directly with their group to understand and address their concerns.
Iliya called on the government to establish a direct line of communication with the widows, ensuring that their needs and requests are heard and addressed through appropriate channels.
In response, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, urged Nigerians to play an active role in supporting the families of fallen heroes.
Speaking to journalists, he encouraged well-meaning individuals to assist in providing for the education, training, and welfare of the children of these families.
The appeal from the Wives of Fallen Heroes underscores the importance of inclusive support mechanisms for military families who bear the burden of sacrifice for the nation’s security.
