Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has defended his decision to consistently include forward Christopher Nkunku in the starting lineup during the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup, insisting the Frenchman has earned his place on merit.
Nkunku was once again in action during Chelsea’s 2-0 semi-final win over Brazilian side Fluminense, helping the Blues secure a spot in the tournament final.
While the 27-year-old’s increased involvement has raised eyebrows—particularly after a modest Premier League campaign last season, where he made just nine starts and scored three goals—Maresca believes Nkunku’s performances justify his selection.
“Christo is playing because he deserves it,” Maresca said following the semi-final clash. “He had chances, and although he didn’t score, he contributed positively to the team’s performance.”
Nkunku’s future at Stamford Bridge has recently come under speculation, with German powerhouse Bayern Munich reportedly interested in signing the forward during the January transfer window.
However, Maresca’s continued reliance on him suggests the player still holds an important role in Chelsea’s current plans, especially in the Club World Cup campaign.
With the London side now set to face either Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain in the final, Nkunku will have another opportunity to silence his critics and make a strong case for a long-term role under Maresca’s leadership.
