The Kwara State Government has imposed a restriction on specific types of vehicles from using Ahmadu Bello Way in the GRA area of Ilorin, effective immediately. The announcement, made by the state’s Ministry of Works and Transport on Friday, directs the Kwara State Traffic Management Agency (KWARTMA) to begin strict enforcement.
Banned vehicles include tricycles (Keke Napep), commercial motorcycles (okada), taxis, trucks, and other heavy-duty vehicles. The restriction, according to Abdulquawiy Olododo, the Commissioner for Works and Transport, is aimed at enhancing safety and traffic flow on the recently rehabilitated road, which links directly to the Government House.
Olododo cautioned that violators would face fines of up to N50,000. “Ahmadu Bello Way is the road network that links to Government House. As such, the signage will be mounted along this axis to restrict access by Motorcycles, Tricycles, commercial vehicles, and heavy-duty vehicles of certain categories,” he stated.
KWARTMA’s Acting CEO, Engr. Bamidele Michael, affirmed the agency’s commitment to implementing the new measures, emphasizing that it would reinforce existing “No Parking” signs and promote public safety.
In addition, the commissioner warned traders against occupying pedestrian walkways, specifically in areas like Ojaoba, Gambari, Ita-Amodu, Agaka, and Balogun Fulani, noting the risks associated with road encroachment. He also cautioned against rising instances of driving against traffic (one-way), promising that violators would face legal sanctions.
“Unlike the ‘No Parking’ sign, the ‘NOT ALLOWED’ sign along Ahmadu Bello Way carries a stiffer fine of N50,000 for violation, and other measures shall be employed to ensure compliance,” Olododo emphasized.
The public is urged to cooperate with the government’s efforts to maintain safer and more efficient roads across the state.
