The latest World Giving Index 2024, published by the Charity Aid Foundation (CAF), reveals Nigeria as the third most generous country in Africa.
The report ranks Kenya at the top of the African list and second globally, highlighting the continent’s strong tradition of generosity despite various challenges.
Kenya’s high ranking comes as the country faces rising unemployment and the increased cost of living.
The nation’s top position is credited to its high levels of volunteering and a strong willingness to assist strangers, reflecting the “utu” spirit of humanity deeply rooted in Kenyan culture.
The Gambia ranks second in Africa and fourth globally, followed by Nigeria in third place and Liberia in fourth.
Nigeria’s placement at fifth globally further emphasizes the widespread culture of giving across Africa.
According to the World Giving Index, 4.2 billion people worldwide engaged in charitable acts in 2022, including donating money, volunteering time, or helping strangers.
This figure accounts for 72% of the global adult population.
The report’s African rankings showcase a range of countries contributing to this global generosity, with Guinea, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Ethiopia, Chad, and Libya also making the top ten.
