Japan secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Nigeria’s Falconets in a rain-soaked encounter in Bogota, advancing to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, where they will face Spain.

The 2018 champions dominated from the outset, creating several early chances before breaking the deadlock in the 33rd minute.

Rihona Ujihara delivered a precise cross that found an unmarked Miyu Matsunaga, who headed home at the back post to give Japan the lead.

Nigeria’s best opportunity in the first half came shortly after, with Rofiat Imuran forcing a smart save from Japanese goalkeeper Akane Okuma.

Despite Nigeria’s efforts, Japan maintained their lead going into halftime, continuing their strong form throughout the tournament.

In the second half, Maya Hijikata doubled Japan’s advantage, converting a cross from substitute Chinari Sasai at the back post.

The goal moved Hijikata into joint-top position in the Adidas Golden Boot race, alongside Brazil’s Vendito.

Though Olushola Shobowale managed to score a consolation goal for Nigeria in stoppage time, it wasn’t enough to turn the tide.

Japan held on to their 2-1 lead, securing their spot in the quarter-finals for a highly anticipated re-match of the 2022 final against Spain.
