Former senator and daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, has confirmed that she is now a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring the party her “natural home.”
Speaking during a monitored interview, Iyabo said her return to active politics followed sustained appeals from supporters who had been mobilising for her comeback for about two years.
“A group of people who I did not bring together… have been working… and they started talking to me about a year ago, saying, ‘Look, we think you are the best candidate. We want you back,’” she said.
The former Ogun Central senator, who served from 2007 to 2011, had stepped away from politics after losing her re-election bid and later pursued an academic career in the United States. Her renewed political move is widely seen as part of early alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Explaining her choice of platform, Iyabo said she ruled out a return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing internal challenges within the opposition party. She added that while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was considered, it was still undergoing internal consolidation.
“So, I think APC is my natural home. I don’t have any animosity towards any individual or any group within the APC… I feel quite confident and happy to have made that decision,” she stated.
Her membership was formalised after she participated in the party’s ongoing electronic registration exercise in her ward in Ogun State, effectively sealing her return to frontline politics under the APC platform.
