The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has expressed deep condolences to the government and people of Niger State over the tragic tanker explosion that claimed multiple lives on Saturday at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP emphasized the critical need for strict adherence to road safety protocols to prevent such devastating incidents. He warned against negligence and the disregard of regulations, which he noted often lead to avoidable tragedies.

“The Inspector-General has directed all State Commissioners of Police to strengthen the Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) of their respective commands in collaboration with other traffic management agencies,” the statement read. This directive aims to ensure strict compliance with traffic regulations and the enforcement of established safety measures on highways.

The IGP also urged vehicle owners and drivers to prioritize roadworthiness and adhere to traffic rules, stressing that proactive safety measures are essential to prevent future disasters.

While mourning the loss of lives, the IGP called on stakeholders, including transport operators and the public, to prioritize safety and accountability in their operations. He expressed hope that with concerted efforts, such incidents can be avoided in the future.

The tanker explosion, which has plunged the affected community into grief, has claimed 86 lives, while the number of injured individuals has risen to 55. One fatality has also been reported among those receiving treatment at a healthcare facility in Dikko.

As the community mourns, the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for safety consciousness and adherence to road traffic regulations across the country.
