FIFA has honored Nigerian football star Asisat Oshoala on social media, acknowledging her remarkable achievements and contributions to the sport.
The global football governing body, through its official FIFA Women’s World Cup account, shared a tribute to Oshoala on their X (formerly Twitter) platform. Accompanied by a video showcasing her image, the post was captioned with her name, “O S H O A L A,” underscoring her iconic status. Oshoala is fondly known by fans as “Agba Baller.”
Oshoala has been a pivotal figure in Nigerian and African football. She played a key role in the Super Falcons’ triumph at the 2014 African Women’s Championship and was crowned African Women’s Footballer of the Year for the first time that same year.
The Nigerian forward also made history as the first African player to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League, achieving this feat three times with FC Barcelona in 2021, 2023, and 2024. Her accomplishments on the continent have earned her the Best Women’s Player in Africa award six times, solidifying her legacy as one of the greatest African footballers of all time.
In February 2024, Oshoala joined Bay FC in the United States, where she has continued to impress. She scored on her National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) debut, securing a 1-0 victory over Angel City. Since her move from Barcelona, she has netted over five goals for Bay FC.
Most recently, Oshoala found the back of the net for Bay FC during their 1-5 loss to Gotham FC in an NWSL fixture on Sunday, October 6, 2024. Despite the defeat, her performance continues to showcase her enduring talent and impact on the global stage.
