The Enugu State Government has denounced the recent bullying and physical assault of a student at Federal Government College, Enugu, describing it as “deeply troubling and emotionally distressing.”

In response, the government has mandated a thorough investigation and called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved. The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, in a public statement released on Tuesday, where he reiterated the state’s strict stance against bullying, abuse, and any dehumanizing treatment in educational environments.

Acknowledging that the incident took place at a federal institution within Enugu, the state government confirmed it is coordinating with the Federal Ministry of Education to ensure appropriate disciplinary actions are taken. This includes holding accountable not only the offending students but also any staff who may have neglected their duty to protect students.

“The Enugu State Government has zero tolerance for bullying and abuse in our schools. The safety and welfare of our students are paramount. The government is resolved to prosecute those who engage in the criminal behaviour of physically assaulting students. Such immoral behaviour has no place in our academic environments, and those who engage in it must be ready to face the consequences,” part of the statement reads.

The state government further assured parents, students, and the public of its commitment to safe learning spaces, highlighting Governor Peter Mbah’s substantial investments in education as proof of a sustained focus on student welfare.

Monday’s release of a viral video showing students assaulting a peer in a hostel sparked widespread outrage, with both government officials and the public condemning the act. The Enugu State Government also reminded all educational institutions of their responsibility to protect students from harassment, intimidation, and violence, warning of severe consequences for failing to uphold these essential values of respect, equality, and freedom.
